Black Haw Viburnum — Viburnum prunifolium

The Black Haw Viburnum has many names that it goes by, such as Stag Bush or Sweet Haw. The shrub is truly versatile and beautiful. It can be groomed to grow as a shrub up to 15' tall and just as wide, which as a shrub will work well as a border or hedge for any landscaping project. It can also be groomed to grow as a full fledge mighty tree up to 30' tall and provide plenty of shading from the harsh summer sun. Whatever the option, whether it is landscaping or a gardening need, the Black Haw Viburnum is the shrub of choice.

The showy round leaves are a brilliant, glossy green that turns vibrant red in the fall season. The bloom is a lovely white flower with intricate yellow details in the center, which shows up in the spring and early summer. In the winter, the Black Haw will lose its showy blossoms and yield a showy fruit of a blueish purple color that our fowl friends love to partake in during the harsh winters. In addition, the fruit that the Black Haw provides is a favorite for those that enjoy making preserves and canning. The fruit can also be picked and eaten straight from the tree.

The Black Haw is a slow grower that can thrive in full sun or partial shade and has no preference to thrive. The growth speed for this beauty is slow to medium, which is excellent if you plan on grooming and pruning this shrub for greatness. It is a sturdy specimen because it has a high tolerance for drought conditions. This lovely shrub is also great as a border against structures or buildings as part of the landscaping and as a tree that can provide plenty of shade and beauty to any area. The Black Haw can handle different pH levels and soils, making it a favorite among shrubs and trees. As long as there is a sound drainage system and plenty of moist soil, the Black Haw will be happy.

The Black Haw is a native shrub to the Missouri region in the United States. It can be found near moist regions like wood or thicket areas and along the banks of rivers and streams throughout Missouri and its bordering states. In addition to Missouri, the Black Haw can be found in zones 3–9 (which includes most of North America’s eastern and midwestern parts). The Black Haw is beautiful to birds, butterflies, and other winged friends during the spring and summer. It is also a haven for birds during the winter season because of the delicious fruit it bears and the brush it offers.

Because of its diversity and strength, the Black Haw is commonly used in urban gardens and landscaping, so finding this shrub is not hard to do in the city. The Black Haw is a very low-maintenance shrub, which is great for first-timers, and in areas where the soil may be acidic or dry, it has no problem thriving. Another striking feature that will catch one’s eye is the look of the Black Haw’s trunk and branches. If you look closely, the shrub’s trunk looks like alligator skin. The branches will not be outdone by the trunk of the Black Haw, with its intricate detailed pattern that resembles fishbones. Adding the Black Haw Viburnum will add beauty to your landscape or garden and be a great and interesting conversation piece for your garden or landscape.
