The Quercus rubra, or as it is more commonly known — the Red Oak tree, is a good candidate for just about any type of soil. A fast-growing tree grows about two feet a year and can get up to be about 60–90 feet in height with a trunk of one to two and a half feet in diameter, and a spread of 45 feet providing a considerable amount of shade. Its green leaves are oblong with seven to eleven lobes which will reward you with intense red color in the fall. The dark grey to sometimes black color of its bark with furrows offering a hint of reddish color offers excellent color to any landscape.

The Red Oak can be found most often along the streets in many towns due to the tree’s high tolerance to pollution and compacted soil, and its wood can most often be found in flooring, cabinetry, and different furniture. Although seen throughout the country, the tree flourishes in zones 3–8 and would make an excellent shade tree in just about any yard.
